Edi Petrescu has joined the MK Dons Community Trust's post-16 education programme. The 18-year-old midfielder from Romania will combine his football development with academic studies while training at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.
Petrescu moved to the UK with the ambition of becoming a professional footballer. He has already achieved a Level 3 BTEC in Sports Coaching and Development and is now studying for a foundation degree in Community Football Coaching and Development. His journey into the programme began after a meeting with the Trust's staff. "I knew I wanted to be a professional footballer, but I had no idea how to take that dream forward after school," Petrescu said. "My parents and I met Lee (Grice, Education Manager at MK Dons Community Trust) and it snowballed from there."
Education and Football Balance
The programme offers a structured alternative to traditional academy routes, which see only one in every 200 youth players in England sign a professional contract. Students undertake 13 hours of classroom education each week, covering units in coaching, sports development, anatomy and physiology. This is balanced with representing the MK Dons badge in fixtures in the CEFA League. Petrescu, described as an all-action midfielder, was also accepted onto Varsity Nine's international football programme, which is based at Bisham Abbey.
Trust's Community Impact
The MK Dons Community Trust's post-16 education initiative was established in 2024 and is open to both male and female students. Education Manager Lee Grice and Schools Manager Matt Broughton oversee the programme, which is designed to provide critical academic and football development opportunities for aspiring professionals. The Trust is based in the city of Milton Keynes and provides a tangible link between the club's community work and its identity.
The programme's structure includes regular training sessions, competitive matches, and educational tutorials. Students also engage in community coaching placements, gaining practical experience by delivering sessions in local schools and clubs under the guidance of Trust staff.
First Team Context
The story emerges as the first-team enjoys a positive spell on the pitch. Milton Keynes Dons sit 14th in League One with 15 points from 12 games, following a 4-1 victory over Bromley last time out. They host Doncaster Rovers, who are 18th, in their next fixtures on Saturday. Petrescu continues his dual commitment at Bisham Abbey, aiming to progress through the Trust's pathway while the senior side builds on its recent form.
