MK Dons CEO Sets Sights on Championship After Promotion
Neil Hart, the chief executive of Milton Keynes Dons (MK Dons), has announced that the club is already planning for their upcoming campaign in League One while setting its sights on a return to the Championship. This was made clear following the team's 3-0 victory over Tranmere, which secured promotion and placed them at the top of League Two.
Hart took over as CEO in 2024 after stints at Burnley and Bolton. His first task post-promotion has been to begin preparations for third-tier football. 'It’s 27 April and we’re done; we know our destiny,' Hart told BBC Three Counties Radio, adding that come August, the club will be playing in League One. 'Clearly we’ve got to bring some more quality into the squad, clearly there’s work to do off the pitch and we’ve got to position the club financially so we can go and compete, and that work is under way,' he said.
The Dons brought in 10 new players last summer, including former Sheffield Wednesday forward Callum Paterson, while Paul Warne joined as manager. Warne has a proven track record of winning promotion to the Championship four times, with Rotherham and Derby, and his appointment hinted at the club's long-term goals beyond this campaign.
Hart emphasized that the club’s ambition lies in the second tier: 'We should be definitely (in the Championship) and that’s where we want to be,' he said. 'There’s a lot of work to get there, but we want to realise the ambition, not just the stadium, but the size of the city and the region, and we want to give people a club to be proud of and come and support to get involved.'
The club aims for 20,000 to 25,000 people in the stadium every week, but achieving this goal requires delivering quality football. Hart acknowledged that there is still much work to do: 'We want 20,000 to 25,000 people in that stadium week in, week out, but we’ve got to deliver the football and we’ve got to get it right, and that’s what we’re trying to do.'
MK Dons' Long-Term Vision
Hart's comments reflect a clear vision for the club's future. The promotion to League One is just the first step in their journey back to the Championship. With Fahad Al Ghanim as the owner, who is invested in taking the club forward, and with plans already underway to bring more quality into the squad, MK Dons are well on their way to achieving their ambitious goals.
Paul Warne's appointment as manager also signals a shift towards a more competitive approach. His experience of winning promotions multiple times will be crucial in helping the team navigate the challenges of League One and lay the groundwork for a return to the Championship.
